About

About the shop on Ventura Blvd.

Tarzana Appliance Repair was founded in 2008 by Joe Cashman — born three blocks off Amestoy, factory-certified on Sub-Zero since 2001, still the one who answers the shop phone before noon.

The shop

We are a small, independent appliance repair shop on Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana, California. We were founded in 2008 by Joe Cashman and we have operated from the same storefront — 18375 Ventura Blvd, between Reseda Blvd and Wilbur Ave — since opening. We’ve never been franchised, acquired, or bought out. We have no call center. When you call the shop phone, someone in the actual shop picks up.

The shop is staffed by Joe and two lead technicians plus an office manager. Every service call is done by one of the three technicians. We do not subcontract, we do not dispatch to a third-party tech network, and we do not use “authorized service partners” as a euphemism for whatever generalist was closest.

Joe Cashman

Joe was born in 1968 on a street three blocks off Amestoy Avenue in Tarzana. His first appliance repair was his mother’s Frigidaire in the summer of 1979 — the compressor had started clanking, and by the time his dad got home from work Joe had the unit apart on the back-porch concrete. A few hours later it was back together and running. (It continued running for another seven years.)

He apprenticed under a certified Sub-Zero technician in Van Nuys through the late 1990s, got his own Sub-Zero factory certification in 2001, and spent the next seven years as the lead in-warranty technician for a Valley-wide residential service chain. By 2007 he’d had enough of the call-center model — the “technician shows up, diagnoses, reports to dispatch, dispatch quotes the client, client approves, technician returns” three-step process that made every repair take three visits instead of one.

In 2008 he took out a small-business loan, leased the narrow storefront on Ventura Blvd between Reseda and Wilbur, and hung the crest himself. Seventeen years later, he’s still answering the shop phone before noon on weekdays, still driving the lead van, and still keeping his first Craftsman socket set — the one he used on his mother’s Frigidaire — in the top drawer of the counter.

Certifications

  • EPA 608 Universal (refrigeration and HVAC), 2001
  • Sub-Zero factory-certified service technician, 2001–present
  • Wolf factory-trained service technician, 2004–present
  • Thermador authorized service technician, 2006–present
  • Viking authorized service technician, 2007–present
  • Miele authorized service technician, 2009–present

Our two lead technicians hold the same Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Miele certifications. One additionally holds a Gaggenau factory-training registration.

How we work

  • Residential only. Major kitchen and laundry appliances. We do not service commercial restaurant equipment, large HVAC systems, outdoor barbecues that aren’t built-in, or small countertop appliances (we’ll refer those out).
  • Factory-trained on the brands that matter. The brand page menu lists the five brands where our depth is genuine — Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, Miele, Viking. We service other brands (Bosch, KitchenAid, GE, LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, etc.) with the same technical rigor, but the deepest certifications are on the five listed.
  • Flat-rate diagnostic. $95 for a standard residential service call. The fee is waived when you approve the repair.
  • 30-day guarantee. Parts and labor, against recurrence of the same symptom.
  • Transparent quotes. We quote flat-rate before any parts come off the van, and we do not add surprise fees.
  • Clean work. We put down floor mats, we wear boot covers on carpet, we haul away packaging. These are minimums, not extras.
